Happy Friday everyone!

I am Roberto, and am passionate about sustainability and the built environment. Here at Carbonbit, we believe that the construction industry has a key role to play in helping to meet national sustainability goals. With that in mind, have you heard of PAS 2080? According to the ‘Infrastructure for climate action’ report by the UN Environment Programme, the built environment is responsible for 79% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, and circa 46% in the UK. PAS 2080 is the world’s first carbon management specification and has been designed to address these issues.

What is PAS 2080?

A PAS is a Publicly Available Standard, which means it is not an ISO (yet), but it has the potential of becoming one in the future. Updated in April 2023, ‘PAS 2080 – Carbon Management in Infrastructure Verification’ is a framework for managing whole life carbon emissions in infrastructure. The standard focuses on developing a culture of challenging conventional and traditional practices in the infrastructure’s value chain and promoting innovation. It can be used by organisations regardless of where they are on their carbon reduction journey.

Implementing PAS 2080 is akin to implementing an environmental management system. It embeds carbon reduction into the organisation by driving behaviour change, engaging everyone in the supply chain, and working towards continual improvement. The standard looks at how emissions can be reduced throughout the lifecycle of the project, from conception to construction, handover, and operation of the asset.

PAS 2080 is about defining good carbon management and what that looks like in your organisation. It covers specific actions for asset owners like water and energy companies, as well as for designers, contractors, and suppliers. It specifies a common language for all the members of the value chain to use, providing clarity on what constitutes good carbon management. It also helps create consistency and transparency in carbon calculations by quantifying the carbon emissions at different points of the infrastructure project, and by identifying how different decisions impact on carbon emissions throughout the whole process.
