What Does ESOS Compliance Mean?
ESOS is the mandatory energy assessment scheme for organisations in the UK that meet the qualification criteria. The Environment Agency is the UK scheme administrator. There are other Article 6 Schemes operational across Europe, often with tax benefits.
Which Organisations Meet ESOS Criteria?
ESOS applies to large UK undertakings and their corporate groups. It mainly affects businesses but can also apply to not-for-profit bodies and any other non-public sectors. Any organisation that is large enough to meet the qualification criteria requires an ESOS. Qualification is based on the status of your organisation on 31 December prior to each compliance period.
Penalties for Non Compliance
Any qualifying businesses that fail to complete an ESOS on time can be fined up to £50,000 and then £500 a day until compliant. ESOS compliance is required every four years including meeting the qualification dates.
