PAS 2080 – Carbon Management in Infrastructure Verification can help businesses gain a competitive edge in bidding for infrastructure tenders by demonstrating commitment to carbon reduction. Additionally, it can reduce the cost of infrastructure delivery by having a carbon-oriented oversight of the project’s design, execution, and operation.
In order to reduce carbon emissions, the standard establishes a carbon reduction hierarchy, meaning it defines how there are various levels of influence at different stages of the process. It prioritises the option to ‘build nothing’ as the biggest opportunity to reduce emissions, followed by ‘build less’ by optimising the design, building more efficiently, and reducing and optimising material use.
Whilst this standard is relatively new, there are already success stories of its implementation. For example, by implementing the standard, Anglian Water reduced its capital carbon by 61%, which translated into a 22% reduction in capital expenditure. And by following the methodologies set by PAS 2080 on the design of the roof of the Old Oak Common Station in West London, designers achieved a 27% reduction in structural steel, which translated to 2,700 tonnes of carbon avoided from being released to the atmosphere, and £7 million pounds saved by the company!
